STR began in September of 1998 with members Nathan Humphris
(vocals/guitar), Josh Mann(guitar/vocals), Jethro Robinson (bass)
and Craig Beames (drums).
Following their first gig, in November '98, they began a
hectic live schedule notching up over 60 shows by the end
of '99. During this time they travelled interstate for an
appearance at the 'Blackstump' festival in NSW and also had
a short visit to Melbourne. The band's first recording, a
tape called Middle Man, was recorded during this time and
sold around 400 copies.
In February 2000, the band embarked on their first overseas
tour and visited New Zealand with Sydney hardcore band Ceasefire.
They performed at the Parachute festival and at all the main,
North island cities. On their return to Australia they received
their first major support, playing with Millencolin to a 1500
strong crowd.
August of 2001, the band's drummer Craig Bemaes decided to
leave the band to travel around the world. The void he left
was filled by Joel Bourne who at the time was playing in No
Questions Asked. In September the band released their debut
EP, titled When Words Fail. The CD debuted at number one in
the SA charts where it remained for 5 weeks, selling out of
its first pressing in less than a month. During this time
the band also made a second appearance at the Blackstump festival
in NSW and visited Melbourne 3 times within as many months.
